The potentiality may continue to existbut is no longer of sufficient importance forus to liveit and reflect that living in our language. We would need to reinvent both words and meaning if we were to find ourselves confronting those experiences again. It is important to look at the nature of language, because it should help us to better come to terms with how we understand the way we experience existence. The discussion thus far suggests that reality is unknowable in the sense that any one of us can encounter, absorb and explain it fully.

Language is the main mechanism by which we tie reality down and come to feel that we have gained mastery over it, but it is clearly a fabrication that works more or less well according to the circumstances. Every oncein a while, like a cat frozen in car headlights, we encounter something that our carefully crafted edifice has no answer to, and then we are afraid. Even 'emotion recollected in tranquility' is limited by both Wordsworth's abilities to perceive and the framework of concepts available tohim.

In a fast-moving society, neither of those conditions is met, whichleads to absurdities where ancient precedent is quoted to decide cases that'bearno comparison. When new employment law is introduced, for example, no one knows what the full implications will and be companies await the setting of precedent and hope that it will not be them in the dock. Good intent and reasonableness are no defence and, as a consequence, an organization's posture will be defensive, on the one hand instinctively reacting against the attempt to limit a sphere of action, and on the other by introseeking to pay lip-service to the new regulations ducing policies that will protect against the loose cannon or bad luck.
