They took clay, put it in a brick mold, took it out again, and then took more clay. So however much they toiled, they were always looking for more clay, and their brick mold always ended up empty. Gregory explains that when people work only for material things, symbolized by clay, they repeat themselves over and over, yet their quest is futile. On the other hand, when they seek God, they receive more and more divine life, and that same life expands their capacity so they can hold still more. This means that with God, people’s potential is unlimited, since they are called to a process of unending growth in the divine.

For change to become good, people must go forward continually; if they stand still they will slide backward. Desire for God is what impels them forward. In eternal growth, one is inspired by what one can see of God to look beyond it toward what one cannot see. Though God is unknowable, one strives to go further toward God, even into God. Then, by God’s grace, one receives more of the divine life. Then desire is rekindled, so one is continually moved to go onward. As the desire increases, the gift increases, and with it the capacity to receive expands too.

His position resonates with many who find it hard to understand how a just God could punish any finite human sin, however great, with eternal and therefore infinite torment. Yet like Gregory they may accept the need for a finite period of purification after death. And this purification could prove painful. Yet Gregory also strongly affirms human freedom, and it is difficult to see how this is fully compatible with universal salvation. If God will save everybody, do they remain free to say no?
