The Heavy Metals include gold, arsenic, bismuth, mercury, thallium, and lead. Skin reactions from the injection of gold compounds are by no means rare. Gold is given either intravenously (Sanocrysin, 0-025 g. ) or intramuscularly (Myocrysin) for lupus erythematosus in dermatology and for rheumatoid arthritis in general medicine. T h e slightest complaint of itching during a course must not be ignored, for if a rash, usually erythema, develops it may proceed to that very serious complication, exfoliative dermatitis, which is sometimes fatal.

T h e usual mistake is to use it too strong. I never exceed \ per cent, as higher concentrations completely mask the clinical signs and render observation of the progress difficult or impossible. Dissolved in calamine lotion if there is much exudation, or in calamine liniment i f there is dryness and scaling, and changed as frequently as the stage of the eruption indicates, it seldom fails to allay both subjective and clinical symptoms in a few hours, while as a \ per cent paint in boric lotion it is probably the best local application for an associated blepharitis.

This feature is characteristic and explains the term ' fixed '. A most striking example of this ' fixed ' eruption undoubtedly due to sulphonamide therapy is recorded by L . Meitzer (J. invest. , 1 9 4 9 , 13, 2 1 3 ) . T h e lesion was localized to the dorsum of the thumb, involuted on cessation of administration, and relapsed within a matter of hours and minutes, with the usual persistent brown staining, on resumption of sulphadiazine and sulphamerazine in small doses. Sulphonamide reactions of this type must be exceedingly rare.
